In my youth, buying a record by a musician I loved was always a magical experience. I remember the joy of listening to a song I had purchased from the local music shop over and over again. Owning a copy of a recording on CD, cassette or vinyl felt really special.
These days, with the advent of music and video streaming platforms, we need only think of a song and a few moments later we can be listening to it to our heart’s content. It’s amazing how technology has changed the way we interact with music.
The reason why I’m mentioning these things is because I’ve found two videos that I return to over and over again, much like the experience of buying a record in my youth. However often I watch these videos, they never lose their appeal.
Fumio Sasaki
The first of the two videos features an interview with Japanese minimalist Fumio Sasaki. It showcases his simple life as a minimalist and author. There’s something enthralling about Fumio sitting in his minimalist apartment eating a meal – the same meal he prepares every day.
Ethan Freckles
The second video that I often return to features ultra-minimalist Ethan Freckles, who sleeps outside every night and whose ‘home’ is a bicycle with a trailer. He spends his time picking up cigarette butts that might otherwise end up in the ocean, and leaving every place he goes a little cleaner than when he arrived. The video showcases a radical lifestyle and inspires me to be more intentional in my own life.
